Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Responsible for the evaluation of IS proposals for financial impact and risk
Act as coach and mentor to other department members for implementations, troubleshooting, and knowledge transfer
Assist in strategic planning for the IS department. Integrate technical knowledge with an understanding of the corporate’s business in making sound recommendations and decisions
Serve as corporate expert for iSeries hardware and operating system issues
Provide oversight where needed or directed for current and new implementations to ensure that quality standards for security, business continuity and high availability are adhered to
Manage infrastructure development projects, which may include project teams comprised of user department personnel, programmers, and outside vendors
Responsible for the operational readiness of the backup recovery centers. Through continued planning and testing, ensure that the backup infrastructure is available, and that all data and hardware replication components operate as expected.
Research and evaluate new systems, technologies, and automation products; then develop strategies for their adoption within Members United technological infrastructure
Ensure that potential technological obstacles are identified and strategies are developed to minimize those obstacles. Research and evaluate industry standards and best practices, and identify what Members United should adopt and/or closely monitor. Ensure long term viability of all infrastructure components, avoiding large expenditures due to technological obsolescence and/or incompatibility
Design appropriate server backup strategies to comply with data retention and recovery requirements. Oversee monitoring to confirm successful backup jobs, and ensure off-site data retention requirements are adhered to
Responsible for identifying future system capacity and performance requirements and for developing technological strategies to accommodate those requirements
Act as technical liaison to provide quality internal customer service by working with business units on a continual basis to identify, define and prioritize strategic technological initiatives
Develop project plans, identifying required activities, resources and schedules.
Responsible for the successful implementation of new systems and infrastructure components. Conduct impact analysis and develop and oversee the execution of system testing and implementation plans. Develop alternative courses of action to ensure that all system implementations and changes to the infrastructure do not negatively impact other production systems
Responsible for resolving disruptions in service. The Senior Network Engineer must attempt to identify the root cause of any system failure, and determine the appropriate course of action to restore processing capabilities while minimizing the impact to Members United and its members.
Develop detailed system design specifications including all protocols, topologies and platforms. Develop system prototypes where appropriate.
Ensure that all systems are properly integrated to achieve the highest level of reliability, control, and availability.
Support the design, testing, and execution of Information Systems system recovery plans for business continuity.
Responsible for the quality and control aspects of assigned projects.
Direct the Network Administrators in the implementation of any non-routine changes to any networking components.
Serve as an escalation point to Network Administrators.
Develop technical documentation, support procedures, and trouble-shooting procedures for all implemented systems.
Act in absence of the Manager of Network Services as needed.

Check Point firewalls;
MS Exchange;
MS IIS;
VPN remote access;
Compaq Insight manager;
TCP/IP networking (DNS, DHCP, WINS);
Telecommunications options related to data and voice networks (T1, T3, MPLS, Frame Relay, Wireless, ISDN, etc.)
PC hardware and software support;
Working in a highly regulated environment with sound change control and security procedures.
In addition, experience in these areas is preferred:
Experience with switched Ethernet LAN’s, modems, CSU/DSU’s, and protocol analyzers;
Experience with VoIP technologies;
Experience with business continuity (DR) design, planning and execution;
Extensive knowledge of Async, Sync, SMTP, SNMP, HTTP, and PPP protocols;
Project management skills.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university or equivalent experience. Eight or more years experience in the information technology field, including design of complex network systems.
Language and Mathematical Skills
Must possess the ability to clearly communicate complex information verbally and in written format. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
MCSE with 3 years experience;
CCNA, or Network+ Certification or equivalent networking experience.
Other Skills and Abilities
Requires working familiarity with all tiers (mainframe, midrange, PC) of computer hardware, software, and network technologies.
Understanding of networks, protocols, and communication technologies required.
Ability to apply technology to business needs is desired.
Excellent time management, customer service and interpersonal skills, along with professional telephone etiquette and experience handling technical support calls.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of data pertaining to system and application security.
Proven ability to multi-task and the skill to handle many user request or problem system entries
Ability to provide leadership and mentoring for other team members.
The ability to travel occasionally is required, with more frequent travel required occasionally during large projects
The ability to work .effectively in a crisis situation is required.
